What Does an IME or CME Involve?

Independent medical exams and compulsory medical exams are both commonly ordered in personal injury, disability, and workers’ compensation cases, but the goal of each examination is slightly different. The defendant’s attorney will order a CME to determine whether the plaintiff sustained any injuries in an accident, while the plaintiff’s attorney will order an IME to determine how extensive the plaintiff’s injuries are.

To answer these questions, the doctor performing the IME or CME will review the plaintiff’s medical records and imaging results, ask them about their personal and family medical histories, and discuss their injury and any symptoms they’ve been experiencing. The doctor will also perform a thorough physical examination. Then, based on all of that information, the doctor will determine whether the plaintiff is actually injured, how serious their injuries are, and whether their complaints are related to the accident at issue.
