Performing Independent & Compulsory Medical Exams in Orlando, FL

Does the plaintiff in your personal injury, disability, or workers’ compensation case need to undergo an independent medical examination (IME) or a compulsory medical examination (CME)? If you’re in Orlando, Florida, or the surrounding area, you can rely on Tampa Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group (a division of Florida Medical Clinic) to perform the exam. We’ve been treating patients since 1949, and our team includes Dr. Daniel Murphy, a board-certified orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon with more than 25 years of experience.

What Is a Compulsory Medical Exam?

Oftentimes, when a plaintiff is seeking financial compensation for an injury, the defendant’s attorney will order them to undergo a compulsory medical exam. The goal of a CME is to determine whether the plaintiff sustained any injuries in the accident in question. To accomplish this, an unbiased third-party doctor will review the plaintiff’s medical records and imaging results, ask them about their personal and family medical histories, speak with them about their injuries and symptoms, and perform a physical examination.

What Is an Independent Medical Exam?

Independent medical exams are slightly different than compulsory medical exams. Rather than being ordered by defense counsel, IMEs are ordered by the plaintiff’s attorney. And while the goal of a CME is to determine whether any injuries were sustained in an accident, the purpose of an IME is to determine the extent of injuries sustained in the accident. With that said, the process used during an IME is similar to that used during a CME.
