Aptly named, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a condition that causes the shoulder to feel stiff, or essentially frozen. Individuals in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and around the globe with this condition may also experience a dull, aching pain that can make performing everyday activities difficult. It occurs when the synovial fluid – the fluid that lubricates the shoulder joint and allows for full range of motion – becomes depleted. As the condition progresses, stiff bands of tissue may develop in the joint capsule (the area where the joint is held in place by connective tissues), making it even more challenging to move and function as normal.
While researchers aren’t entirely sure what triggers frozen shoulder, a few risk factors have been identified. They include:
- Being a female over the age of 40
- Having a systemic disease, namely diabetes and overactive or underactive thyroid
- Immobilizing the shoulder for an extended period of time as a result of an injury, stroke, or surgical recovery
