What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is an inflammation of the tendons that connect the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. It is considered to be an overuse injury that results from frequent repetitive motions, such as those a tennis player may perform. Despite its name, though, tennis elbow can affect anyone, not just athletes. Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain or a burning sensation around the outside of the elbow and a weakened hand grip.
What does tennis elbow treatment involve?
Tennis elbow treatment will vary according to the severity of the condition. For many, conservative approaches like periodic rest, physical therapy, and bracing can reduce inflammation and provide adequate relief from symptoms. Less commonly, surgery to remove damaged muscles and secure healthy tissues may be recommended for patients who do not respond to conservative techniques after several months of treatment.
