What Can I Expect After Knee Arthroscopy?

A knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to diagnose or treat a variety of joint problems, such as soft tissue injuries, joint inflammation, and bone fractures. It utilizes an arthroscope—a thin, long surgical instrument with a tiny camera on the end that’s inserted through a small incision. The camera sends live images to a monitor in the operating room, which allows the surgeon to get a detailed view of the joint space without making large cuts. Additional specialized instruments may also be inserted through small incisions to treat issues like ligament tears, torn cartilage, and bursitis.

Recovering From a Knee Arthroscopy

Because a knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, it generally requires a shorter recovery period than traditional open surgeries. It also involves:

  • Less post-operative discomfort
  • A lower risk of complications
  • Less surgical blood loss
  • A more rapid return to everyday activities

The specifics of what you can expect after a knee arthroscopy will depend on why your surgery was performed. For example, a diagnostic procedure that requires only one incision will involve less recovery time than a procedure to address a torn ACL. In general, though, many people who undergo a knee arthroscopy can recover in about six weeks.

Immediately After the Procedure

Immediately after a knee arthroscopy, you can expect your knee to be sore and swollen. Your knee may also bruise and you’ll likely feel tired for a few days. These are considered perfectly normal side effects of surgery that should improve fairly quickly. If you have a desk job, you’ll probably be able to return to work in a few days.

To help streamline your recovery, be sure to follow your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines to the letter. This may include attending physical therapy sessions or performing gentle stretches and exercises at home. It’s also important to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and promptly reach out to your surgeons if you have any questions or concerns.
