Bursitis is a condition characterized by a tender inflammation of a bursa, which is a small, fluid-filled sac that serves to cushion a joint and reduce friction. In between the tendons, bones, ligaments, and muscles located throughout the body, there are approximately 160 bursae, any of which can become inflamed through overuse, infection, or injury. Certain areas are particularly prone to inflammation as a result of repetitive activity or trauma, such as the:

  • Elbow – trauma can occur through repetitive bending
  • Knee – often becomes inflamed from constant kneeling, a condition also known as clergyman’s knee
  • Ankle – can develop issues as a consequence of poorly fitting footwear or overuse
  • Hip – inflammation frequently ails runners and sprinters
  • Buttocks – problems can arise from sitting on hard surfaces for extended periods of time
  • Shoulder – pain in the shoulder can result from overhead lifting or reaching

Once bursitis is diagnosed, it can often be successfully treated through a conservative regimen of rest, elevation, compression, ice, and painkillers. In rare instances, however, surgery may be recommended to drain the inflamed bursa. To facilitate healing and prevent future occurrences of bursitis, it’s best to protect the parts of the body that are most vulnerable by wearing appropriate knee pads, elbow braces, or properly fitting footwear that is suitable for the activity. It is also very important to warm up, strengthen the muscles, and regularly vary your movements.
