IMEs vs. CMEs: What’s the Difference?
Independent medical exams and compulsory medical exams are quite similar. During each examination, an unbiased third-party doctor reviews the plaintiff’s medical records and imaging results, learns about their personal and family medical histories, asks about their injuries and any symptoms they’ve been experiencing, and performs a physical exam. Then, the doctor determines whether the plaintiff is injured, evaluates the severity of any injuries, and decides whether the plaintiff’s complaints are related to the accident in question.
However, IMEs and CMEs have different objectives. While CMEs are ordered by the defendant’s attorney to determine whether the plaintiff sustained any injuries in an accident, IMEs are ordered by the plaintiff’s attorney to assess the extent of the plaintiff’s injuries.
