Why Do I Have Knee Pain While Running?

Knee Pain While RunningThe knee is the largest, and quite possibly the most complex, joint in the body. So, it comes as no surprise that knee pain can occur during high-impact activities like running. If you have knee pain while running, runner’s knee may be to blame.

As its name suggests, runner’s knee often affects runners. This term actually describes several knee conditions that cause pain around the knee cap, including:

  • Anterior knee pain syndrome
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Chondromalacia patellae
  • Patellofemoral malalignment

One way to address knee pain while running is to implement the R.I.C.E. method. Here’s how it works:

  • Rest – Take a break from running and other high-impact activities.
  • Ice – Placing an ice pack on your knee for about 20 to 30 minutes at a time can help reduce inflammation and discomfort.
  • Compression – Using an elastic bandage, snugly wrap the knee to help reduce swelling – just be sure not to wrap it too tight.
  • Elevation – Keep the knee elevated above your heart using a pillow to further reduce swelling.

Taking over-the-counter pain relievers and engaging in gentle stretching may also help you feel better. In the event that your discomfort persists despite these methods, be sure to consult with a physician.
