Who Should Not Get PRP Therapy?

If you’ve done a little research on today’s most popular orthopedic treatments, you’ve likely come across platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and its many potential benefits. Unlike traditional treatments that primarily focus on addressing the symptoms of a condition, PRP aims to accelerate healing within damaged joints and tissues. Before we get to who should and should not receive PRP therapy, let’s take a quick look at how this treatment works.

Blood features very small, solid components known as platelets. These platelets contain a large number of special proteins called growth factors that play an integral role in the body’s natural healing processes. During PRP therapy, a small blood sample is collected from the patient and processed in a centrifuge machine to separate growth factor-rich platelets from other blood cells. These platelets are concentrated (up to 10 times more than usual) and injected directly into the patient’s injured joint or tissue to kick-start healing and help the patient return to normal activities as quickly as possible.

While PRP therapy is a nonsurgical treatment that is associated with very little risk, it’s not right for everyone. So, who shouldn’t get PRP? You likely won’t be considered a candidate for this treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have advanced-stage osteoarthritis
  • Have a blood disorder
  • Are anemic
  • Currently have an infection or cancer
  • Are receiving anticoagulation therapy

Who Should Explore PRP Therapy?

On the other hand, PRP therapy is recognized as a viable treatment option for many people with:

  • Muscle injuries
  • Meniscus injuries
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Tennis elbow

Specifically, an ideal candidate for PRP therapy is one who:

  • Has tried more conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and medication, without success
  • Is in good overall health
  • Does not have extensive joint degeneration

PRP therapy has shown to be more effective in younger, more active patients, although it’s possible for a person of any age to experience the benefits of this treatment.
